    - This chapter is an introduction to the microcontrollers and display systems used in microcontroller based applications. The chapter describes the basic features of the microcontroller and microprocessor systems. The differences between the microcontrollers and microprocessors are given. The chapter gives a brief summary of the historical development of microprocessors and microcontrollers. Important parts of a typical microcontroller are explained. The typical display devices used in microcontroller based applications are described. In particular, the advantages and disadvantages of various display devices such as LEDs, OLEDs, and LCDs are given. Finally, the viewing modes of LCD displays are described briefly.
